San Bernardino, CA — October 17, 2025
Victor Valley College Men's Soccer delivered a statement win on Friday afternoon, toppling conference powerhouse San Bernardino Valley College 3-2 in a thrilling Inland Empire Athletic Conference (IEAC) road match. The Rams, now 8-6-3 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play, showcased grit, precision, and teamwork to overcome the Wolverines (10-3-2, 3-1-0) in front of a crowd of 66 at SBVC's Soccer Field.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
VVC wasted no time asserting themselves, striking twice in the first half. Freshman forward Daniel Miralda opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finishing a well-placed assist from Alonso Lopez to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later, Eric Franco doubled the advantage with a composed finish off a setup from Anthony Hernandez, sending VVC into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead.
Second Half Drama
San Bernardino Valley clawed back with a goal early in the second half, but VVC responded swiftly. In the 61st minute, Brandon Zabala netted what would become the game-winner, capitalizing on a brilliant assist from Franco to make it 3-1. The Wolverines managed one more goal in the 78th minute, but the Rams' defense held firm in the final stretch.
Defensive Backbone and Goalkeeping Heroics
Anchoring the backline were stalwarts Dominic Castillo, Cesar Gonzalez, and Victor Montes, each logging significant minutes and contributing to the defensive stand. Goalkeeper Emmanuel Lopez was a wall between the posts, recording 8 saves on 10 shots on goal, including several crucial stops in the dying minutes to preserve the win.
Midfield Mastery and Offensive Firepower
Midfielders Matthew Huerta and Chris Palacios controlled the tempo, while Alonso Lopez and Eder Martinez provided key support in both attack and defense. The Rams tallied 15 shots, with 8 on target, and earned 4 corner kicks.
Discipline and Determination
Despite receiving yellow cards late in the match—Cesar Gonzalez, Eric Franco, and Dominic Castillo among them—the Rams maintained composure and focus. Their 19 fouls reflected a physical but determined approach to securing the upset.
Looking Ahead
This victory marks a pivotal moment in VVC's season, proving they can compete with the best in the IEAC. With momentum on their side, the Rams will look to build on this performance as they continue their push toward postseason contention.
