Student-Athlete Eligibility Overview
Student athletes at California Community Colleges can participate in a specific sport for up to two seasons; this includes seasons at other institutions. To be eligible, student athletes need to fulfill these criteria:
Basic In-Season Eligibility Requirements
-
Must be enrolled in 12 units while in season.
-
A minimum of 9 units must be academic. For example: Math, English, GE, and/or other Major Classes.
-
With a minimum of 6 academic units starting at the beginning of the semester.
-
Waitlists and audits do not count towards the unit requirement.
-
Enroll in the Athletics (ATHL) sport class.
-
Have an education plan on file.
-
Students who enter their season late are required to be enrolled in at least 1 class no later than 8 weeks after the first day of class instruction for the primary term.
Second Season Eligibility
In addition to the above, you must complete 24 semester units between seasons of competition. A minimum of 18 units must be academic units.
-
A minimum of 6 units must be completed during the preceding term.
-
All 24 units must be completed prior to the beginning of the semester of the second season of the sport.
-
D grades will count towards the 24-unit requirement. However, units from a course repeated to raise a grade of “D’ or better are not counted.
You must have a minimum of 2.0 GPA from first participation in any sport.
-
The GPA is calculated using units beginning at the start of your first season through the end of the semester prior to the second season’s semester.
Transfer Students
From another California Community College: As of Summer 2025, athletes who participated in any sport must complete 3 units in residence at VVC, prior to the beginning of the semester of competition. Residency rule is waived if 2 or more years have elapsed.
From a Four-Year or Out-of-State Institution: No residency requirements.
All transfer students who competed must still meet the unit and GPA requirement for a second season of competition.
Transferring Out
Most student athletes will need to complete their AA/AS/AD-T degree before transferring to a 4-year school.
Student athletes must complete English C1000, English 104, a math course, a science preferably with a lab, and 40% of the major. 48 transferrable units are required.
Student athletes need to sign up with the NCAA (or NAIA) eligibility center before transferring and confirm amateurship status.
