Victor Valley Football Drops Opener to Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA – Victor Valley College Football suffered a 28 to 31 heart-breaking loss on Saturday, September 2nd to Santa Monica. The game was back and forth the entire time, with 7 total lead changes. Time finally ran out as the Rams were attempting the go-ahead drive. 

 There were some bright spots in the game that the Rams can build on and some areas of improvement as the Rams head into their 2nd game this upcoming Saturday.  

“I am very happy with our Special Teams play and the way we were able to control the line of scrimmage up front running the football. Hats off to our offensive line.”, said Coach David Slover. “I am proud of the way our men fought. We will improve as coaches and players”.  

There were some standout performances in the game, specifically our running back tandem of Deshawn Minor and Teshawn Cleveland. Minor had a game-high 97 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Cleveland chipped in with 78 yards on 11 carries and two Touchdowns. These performances are especially meaningful, as both young men suffered season ending injuries to start the season in 2022, and were not able to compete.  

The game started with fireworks as Rodney Harris returned an 85 yards kick return for a Touchdown on the first kickoff. Santa Monica answered right back with a short 2 play 66-yard drive to tie the game. This would be a theme throughout the game as the teams traded blows all night.  

Our defense had a hard time stopping the Corsairs offense as they racked up 454 yards of offense including 366 passing yards. Coach Slover's run defense showed some great promise holding the Corsairs to 2.8 rushing yards per carry.  

The Rams look to bounce back this Saturday September 9th, at 6:00pm facing off against Glendale College in our first home game of the season. The game will be played at Sultana High School.
