Men's Basketball Wins First Game

Victor Valley University's basketball team secured their first win of the season with a 92-85 victory over Golden West University on November 1, 2023. The game took place at Golden West and showcased an impressive performance by Victor Valley.

First year Coach William Funn was happy to get the first win, but knows the is work to do. "It felt good getting that first win, but there is so much that we need to work on if we want to be the team that I know we are capable of being this season". 

The game started with a strong offensive showing from Victor Valley, as they scored 47 points in the first half compared to Golden West's 34 points. Jordan Malveaux led the charge for Victor Valley, scoring 24 points and shooting 9-13 from the field. He also contributed with 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Sheldon Grant was another key player for Victor Valley, scoring 16 points and shooting 5-10 from the field.

Golden West fought back in the second half, outscoring Victor Valley 51-45. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit from the first half. Soma Doherty was the leading scorer for Golden West, finishing the game with 20 points and shooting 6-13 from the field. He also grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 2 assists. Dominic Mcbride contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for Golden West.

Both teams had a similar shooting percentage, with Victor Valley shooting 55.0% from the field and Golden West shooting 40.9%. However, Victor Valley had the advantage in three-point shooting, making 3 of their 11 attempts compared to Golden West's 6 of 22.

Victor Valley's strong performance can be attributed to their ability to control the boards, outrebounding Golden West 42-34. They also had fewer turnovers, committing only 23 compared to Golden West's 19.

Overall, it was an exciting game between Victor Valley and Golden West, with Victor Valley coming out on top. This win gives Victor Valley a 1-0 record for the season, while Golden West falls to 0-1. Both teams showed promising performances, and it will be interesting to see how they progress throughout the season.

The Rams will face off next against San Diego Mesa on the road Monday, Novemember 6th at 5:00pm.
